In this project, we looked for good news stories that we could turn into stories and tell in the form of comics. I looked for stories that were relevant at the time and would continue to be relevant in the future.

A comic about the feminist protests in Amsterdam about the lack of public facilities for women.
That's how I came across the APOPO initiative, the giant rats, Gerede Piening, and the Amsterdam pee protest. Their stories fascinated me, so I decided to turn them into a comic. With the giant rats, I quickly realized that I wanted to portray them as superheroes, as they are also referred to as “HeroRats” in the organization. I created the comic using ProCreate, using only the color blue. Later, I also used the complementary color yellow in select places to break up the dominance of blue a little. I did the same with the occasional use of photos. On the one hand, they break with the style, but on the other hand, they act as a kind of proof and thus give the comic even more credibility. For the pee protests, I worked exclusively with illustrations. Here, I also worked with a clear color palette to distinguish myself from the story and the social media posts.
A person holding a newspaper showing Volume 1 of HeroRats the comic.
A comic about the discovery of HeroRats and their ability to detect landmines.
A comic sequel about the story of HeroRats detecting tuberculosis.
